CARB Mandated OBD Compliance Reporting Update

Presented by John F. Van Gilder, P.E. (Van Gilder Engineering) at theWorld Automotive Congress (WCX) in Detroit, April 18-20,, 2023. Describes the approach that the Health Ready Components and Systems (HRCS) Consortium is developing to meet the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) request that all OEMs provide more comprehensive documentation regarding electronic powertrain input and output signals. The minimum prerequisite will be for OEMs to disclose all OBD-relevant serial data signals at the point where they cross the DEC ECU/non-DEC ECU boundary. This presentation outlines the expected product of the HRCS’ project effort: a Recommended Practice consisting of the Signal Net, an Exchange Format, and Analysis Methods.
